The inflammation of small finger-like bulges of the lining of the intestines which causes pain in the lower left side of the abdomen, constipation and sometimes fever.
Prevention
Constipation is often the underlying cause.
Treatment
Dietary
Initially, low bulk foods may be required while the bowel is very inflamed and sensitive. However, it is important to incorporate more fibre into the diet gradually to help soften the motions and prevent constipation, which makes the condition worse. Gradually increase intake of cooked vegetables, brown rice and pasta, and later raw vegetables and fruit and any other whole grain cereals. Drink at least 6 glasses of water daily. Avoid foods with pips and seeds which may lodge in the diverticula.
Herbal
Garlic helps combat infection: incorporate liberally into your diet, or take 3-6 capsules daily. Decoction of slippery elm helps soothe the inflamed diverticula: add 1 teaspoon of the powder to half a cup of water, bring to the boil and simmer for 15 minutes. Drink three times daily.
Massage
Using a light vegetable oil, gently massage your lower abdomen with circular strokes in a clockwise direction for several minutes before rising in the morning. Follow this with a glass of warm water or herbal tea.
Orthodox
Antibiotics are often prescribed to remedy the infection. Antispaasmodic drugs may also be given to reduce pain.
