Thrombosis- Deep Vein PDF

Deep Vein Thrombosis...

The clotting of blood in the deep-lying veins of the legs which inhibits the return of blood to the heart. (The same condition can occur in the superficial veins of the legs and is known as thrombophlebitis). It is generally caused by sluggish circulation due to sitting or lying for long periods. Pregnant women and women taking the Pill are more susceptible. Symptoms include pain, tenderness, swelling and discoloration of the leg, sometimes with ulceration of the skin. This is a serious complaint and treatment should be carried out in consultation with your doctor.

Prevention

The risk of developing this condition is greatly reduced by getting people up out of bed as soon as possible after childbirth or surgery. If you are immobilized for long periods, try to keep the blood circulating by wiggling the toes and flexing ankles and knees. Massage is very helpful in stimulating circulation of the veins of the legs. However, avoid massaging directly on varicose veins. Do not smoke. Avoid taking the Pill. Do not sit for long periods without getting up to move your legs. When traveling, get up and walk about 30 minutes. Put your feet up when resting. Wear support hosiery.

Treatment
- Herbal

Incorporate plenty of raw garlic into your diet, or take 3 garlic capsules 3 times daily. Ginger is also helpful in stimulating circulation. Add to your meals or make an infusion by adding a cup of boiling water to 1 teaspoon of the peeled, grated root, infuse for 15 minutes and drink 3 times daily.

Hydrotherapy

Contrasting temperatures help stimulate sluggish circulation. Spray the legs first with cold water then hot for 5 minutes each. Repeat several times morning and evening.
